US helicopter crashes killing 1 as losses mount in Afghanist

Post by PNegri »

KABUL -- A helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan on Saturday killed one International Security Assistance Force servicemember, and injured another, ISAF officials said.

According to officials in Kandahar, a two-passenger OH-58 crashed in the Daman District of Kandahar in the early evening hours.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but, according to ISAF, there was no enemy activity in the area at the time of the crash.

News of the helicopter crash comes after the deadliest day this year for U.S. troops on Monday. A Black Hawk helicopter crashed outside of Kandahar, killing five U.S. troops. Two more U.S. troops were killed by an insider attack that same day.

The past two weeks were also marred by suicide attacks in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, and in the eastern province of Khost, during a visit by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel.

The blast in Kabul killed 8 civilians, and wounded six or seven others. Hagel was in another part of the city when the blast took place.
