Re: EHGR 27-02-2012
after watching and filming arrivals of two WA ANG KC-135s at Geilenkirchen with some sune-shine, I decided to make the 90 minutes journey to Gilze in order to experience some combat helicopters for a change. When arriving at the runway 28 approach I was rather dissappointed as not a single Apache was parked on the ramp and I already got slightly sad about my decision for a few seconds, when I observed a nowadays rare Cougar practicing with some sling-loads south of the runway. Only a minute later, an Apache performed a practice approach, soon followed by a second example. At the same time, I discovered another Cougar and two Chinooks preparing for the departure on the far side. When these where just airborne, two Royal Army Lynx helicopters passed the airbase at low altitude heading westbound.
After almost 15 minutes silence, allowing just for a very short „broodje“, the two Apaches departed again for some very intensive local flying, followed by two Cougars (including a third example that day!), a third Chinook and even a third Apache. Additionally, two PC-7s performed practice approaches at early afternoon. When the drizzles and mist came in and the runway lights were switched off at 16.00 hrs, it was finally time for heading back home - what a great mil aviation day for 2012 in Western Europe)
