My own impression of a very nice airshow - Leeuwarden 2011
Over the years I had some pretty stiff critiques about the Dutc airshows, especially when it came to demo teams. This year it was a perfect blend of demo-teams, operations, history, jets, props and helicopters. Thumbs up for the organisation !!
Here is my selection, shot on Friday 16 September 2011.
Hope you like it,
Iwan

Hey Kerel,
Your shots look super! I do love all of them but two and four could have been taken from a Skyvan or something like that! Head-on but great shots!! Taken from the outside? Keep-up the good work!!
Cheers ,
CJ.

Hey Iwan,
Nice pics boldy!
Normaly I'm a fan of your pics, but this time I see some deficiencies... what happened?? A lot of noise(2, 3 and 4) and even some a little unsharp (8, 19 and 20)... Do I have to reset my monitor
Grtz

I am sorry Iwan but I have to agree on this one..
Normally I am speechless about your pics, and you are an example for me how to edit and learn from your angles..
But he... there are still some very nice shots in your contribution

Re: My own impression of a very nice airshow - Leeuwarden 2011
Hi guys,
Thanks for being honest. I appreciate that.
During the airshow I was testing a couple of things. Shot 2, 3 and 4 are indeed a little bit noisy, as they were taken at ISO 800 and cropped to the extreme. Check out the original shot below and you may be impressed about how "little" noise there is, compared to the sharpness that still remains. Oh, and for the record, all three images were shot with an old 1.4x extender on a lens WITHOUT image stabilizer.
The motivation for this test was that I wanted to get some photos with high apperture AND high shutterspeed at the same time. All three are shot at 1/2000 and apperture f8, f10 or even f13, hence the ISO 800.
As for the soft focussed images 19 and 20, these are the result for an opposite test. In order to obtain rotorblur, I dropped the shutterspeed to 1/160 sec. Not very easy to do with a 6 kg lens (400/2.8L), shot from bare hands, without IS. To me this test failed, and I will use the 300/2.8 IS next time.
Do the problem shots make sense now ? Feel free to check the EXIF's for more info. What do you think about the test results now that you know what was done to achieve them?
Cheers,
Iwan

Hi,
Thanks for the explanation, it's fine by me...
I thought you had self-criticism high on your agenda so I didn't expected to see some (test) pics like these, out of your camera, appear on the MB.
A lot of viewers don't even notice this I think, that's more then okay too. Maybe they don't dare to react with a negative comment as you're still Iwan the horrible/terrible/terrific/dreadful and
mortal...
Grtz,
S

Hey Iwan,
Nice to see that you do also receive some negative reactions, must be kind of strange for you.
I respect you for dropping your shutter speed in some of you pics that - photographically seen - is quite a challenge when using long telephoto lenses thus creating some prop-blur and speed! I know you as some-what conservative when it comes to lower shutter speeds and the risk that comes with it. Keep up the good work and try a different head on your tripod (Naturestuff or Wimberly), these could give you quite some improvement while photographing helicopters of prop-aircraft. You could also try to get some air-to-air work done as you will be able to drop the speeds lower then 1/25! Take some risks! A crisp picture of a rotor/prop- equipped aircraft taken with a 1/1000 is way toooooooooo easy!
Once again; great stuff!

Hi Iwan,
I am glad that you take the comment like this!!!
And I am surprised that you can get that result out off those setting and the heavy cropp.
This putt an other perspective to your pics! (for me)
Like I told you before, to me you are one off the best photographers there is around here.
Cheers

Re: My own impression of a very nice airshow - Leeuwarden 2011
I don't think there is something wrong with picture 8 : the camera is focused on ST27 and not on ST04 which is in front of ST27.
Granted, I always take low shutterspeed helicopter pictures with my EF 400 mm 5.6 without IS and it is damn difficult and sometimes very frustrating work. And that lens doesn't even weigh 6 kg... But all the more rewarding when you do get that great shot !

@Iwan, anyway, great shots, great light on the last Mig shot.
@kw. You hit the nail right on the head, i borrowed a 400mm 5.6 and it is a bitch to get under 1/100
