NIKON 300mm AFS f/4 D IF ED
I'm looking to buy a new lens, I'm using a sigma 50-500 and I would like to know if the Nikon 300mm AFS f/4 is a good lens for aviation photography. Does some of you using it?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: NIKON 300mm AFS f/4 D IF ED
I've got the Nikon 300 F4 AF-S IF ED and I can tell you, it's a great lens. I have no doubt that you'll be amazed by the sharpness compared to your 50-500. Even though it's limited in flexibility, it won't disappoint you if you're looking for high quality pictures. Even with a 1.4 TC it gives great results, much better than with your 50-500 @ 420mm.

I'm using this lens, and I'm verry happy with it. I also use the 300 sometimes with a 1.4 converter (Nikon TC-14E) witch preform perfectley.
It's a big improvement in compare with the Bigma wich I've also used before. I can only say, buy it and I'm sure you don't regret it.
If you want to see some shots taken by me with a D90 and the 300 f/4.0you can take a look at Airfighters or Birdpix. And for testreports check this site.

Re: NIKON 300mm AFS f/4 D IF ED
I have got the Nikkor 4.0/300mm AF-S and it is truly an amazing lens. I used it for years and years on my F5 and I still use it - almost daily(!) - on my D3 and D700. I think this lens is one of Nikon's best kept secrets... and compared to its 2.8 'brother' a real bargain. On my website, although still under construction, there are plenty of examples to be found of pics I shot with this lens. If you have any more questions, just PM me, okay?

Thank you for your reply, I think I will do my last airshow season with the Bigma and next year will be with the Nikon. It look really sharp, I love that!

Hi there,
I also have this lens, with a Nikon 1.7x TC. All my pics on this thread have been shot with this combo.

I use it without TC for helicopters, large planes and WW2 stuff, it gives real stunning results. I also get great shot with the TC, but the light really improves the hit ratio, and a bit sharpening and contrasting is needed in post processing (I use Lightroom). But still much much better than the sigma.
Another great thing about this lens is that it is so much lighter than the bigma. I used the Sigma 70-200, 100-300, 50-500 and boy am I sorry for not having bought this lens earlier. And at least I know I will not be upgrading soon, as the next step is so much more expensive
Finally do not think about the drawbacks of a prima. You WILL have enough oportunities to take pics, only from another angle. The only difference is that you will have a HELL of a job sorting your keepers once home...
Believe me, sell a kidney and buy the lens now, if you don't you will realize next year that you threw one more season away!
Greets,
Arthur

I also have this lens for many years and it is a joy to use it. It is sturdy and compact and delivers excellent pictures. If you have the means, I would not wait one more year and change right now. If you need examples with this lens, just let me know by PMMidair wrote:I'm looking to buy a new lens, I'm using a sigma 50-500 and I would like to know if the Nikon 300mm AFS f/4 is a good lens for aviation photography. Just check out the pictures menno makes! The quality of the 300 is, imo, far superior to the sigma.

I also didn't have the money for a new one, so I bought one through Marktplaats for less then 2/3 of the newprice.
I know, they are rare on Marktplaats, but just be patient, (I had to be for about a year ) and be critical. If you doubt, don't buy!!
And I can only agree to the previous comments: it's a great lens !!
