Spotting at Heraklion (LGIR/HER)

Hello,

This summer I will go to Crete for holidays. I will try to spend some days spotting at the airport (I'm a civil spotter).

Does anyone know something about spotting in Crete? Problems with security (keeping the British group of 2007(?) in mind...)?

I have written an article about Heraklion spotting in Skyliner magazine about 2 years ago. I can send you the article if you want to. Send me a pm with your e-mail address.

I can further offer to produce a slotlist for Heraklion. This is a list with expected arrivals and departures (no garantees given, but my experience is that 95% is correct). This will cost me more time. Please inform me about the period you are in Heraklion.

We a little caution, spotting shouldn´t be a problem this days in Heraklion. Beside that, except the AB205 SAR heli, there is nothing military left there. Still, the Air Base is operational.

Sorry for the off topic, but Peter, can you provide such a list also for other Greek airports (also smaller ones)?

Spotting should be no problem, even photography is possible. From inside the terminal it is not allowed (there is signage), but outside the airport you will find some areas and a beach which show you departing or arriving traffic. From the beach it's easy to make good approach photos also. In that case, you best arrange a rental car, since the public bus running between Heraklion-Airport-Malia does not stop nearby that spot.
