Rui..
Stayed in the Birchwood many times... You can take pics from the hotel parkinglot which is inside the hotel premises which is a secured area. Very safe! Surrounding around hotel ok.. A shopping centre is located next to the hotel. Also a nice restaurant called SPUR is there... No problems at all! But use common safety sense!! But why hang around the hotel only.. ??approach areas for all runways have many nice photolocations too. Light at hotelparkinglot is ok from sunrise until 1100.
Do not forget to visit the nice aviation themed bar located @ the Birchwood which is having the cockpit of a former SAA 747-200 inside!!!

Hi Rui,
What Ton says is totally correct. The hotel is situated in a relative save part of Johannesburg. On the hotel perimeter nobody could harm you but outside you are on your own. In daytime it should be safe but you never know what kind of person(s) you could met.
I haven't got any trouble with security yet, they are only currious in what I'm doing and don't mind that I'm taking pictures.
Today I went searching for some other locations outside, but nearby, the perimeter of the hotel I ended up at two locations where I had the sun in my back this was aprox. a ten minut walk. Unfortunately it was already late in the afternoon (16:30 till 17:30) so I could only made a couple of pictures because of the sunset (the last five pictures from today I made there).
Grtz Chris.

Dear Ton and Chris,
Me and my friend couldn'be more pleased with both of your anwsears . As for the security issue, common sense is the key word I suppose. Although still a long way to go until next years early Summer season, I can't take JNB out of my head.
Please keep up the excellent work, your photos are soooo great, and so is traffic there.
Thank you so much for your time
Best regards

Hi Chris,
Again a very nice set of shoots showing JNB finest . I have another question, this time is regarding your 7th September entry. Regarding the photos were planes are approaching from right to left, were these photos taken on an afternoon spot RWY 03 or morning spot RWY 21. If this last one is the case could you please give me a reference of the spotting location?
Once again, thank you so much for the information.
Best regards,
Rui Migue
