Texel Airshow 31/7/10 and 30/7/11 - Cancelled

Op Twitter lees ik dat de Airshow op Texel op31 juli 2010 zou zijn afgelast .
Dit omdat vliegbasis de Kooy dan 3 maanden dicht zou zijn, en de veiligheid dus niet gegarandeerd kan worden.

Dear friends,

I do have very bad news about the Texel Airshow of 31 July 2010. When organising this show we need a proper alternate aerodrome for a number of our participants like the French Air Force Alphajet and the Breitling Jet Team as well as for emergency alternate during our event. Airbase De Kooy is the base we used all the time, but we just received the final message that this base will definitively be closed for three months this summer because of renovation work on the runway. This means that we do not have a proper alternate this year and that is why we unfortunately have to cancel the Texel Airshow 2010 because of safety reasons. I hope we did not cause you to much trouble and we truly hope that you will be able to support us on 30 July 2011!!

De Kooy will be closed indeed for three months due to runway renovations and building new infrastructure. Rather strange in this subject is that the closure was announced for April, Mai and June (as was also told until last weekend).

De Kooy will reconstruct their runway starting at end of July according our information. For helicopters a special parellel taxiway (12 m width) will be built in the meantime. But for fixed wing this track is not available (too small). The reconstruction is planned to be finished within 3 months.

The quote starting with "Dear friends", is the email we send as organisation of the Texel Airshow to our participants today at 16:19 local time.

But let's answer the big question:
We don't say the Texel Airshow is cancelled, we want to stay positive. Let's say the Texel Airshow is postponed until the 30th of July 2011! Be there!!!

I don't get it you have two parallel runways right next door called "Postweg" and "Hoofdweg". Just file a request by your mayor Francine Giskes.

In short: The Ministry of Defence has decided to postpone runway renovations at the Kooy for one year, again effectivly leaving the Texel show without an emergency (concrete) runway.

In verband met het sluiten van Vliegveld De Kooy voor drie tot vier maanden vanaf juli 2010 werd besloten de Texel Airshow 2010 met één jaar uit te stellen. Het gebruik van de Luchthaven Den Helder is namelijk cruciaal vanwege de functie als uitwijkhaven ten tijde van calamiteiten, alsmede voor het stationeren van toestellen die niet op Texel Airport kunnen landen. Aangezien de organisatie geen concessies doet ten aanzien van de veiligheid was deze beslissing de enige juiste.

Drie weken geleden bereikte ons echter het bericht, dat het Ministerie van Defensie heeft besloten de baanrenovatie op De Kooy uit te stellen tot het voorjaar van 2011. Dit heeft te maken met vertraging die is opgelopen tijdens de aanleg van een taxibaan, die tijdens de baanrenovatie als start- en landingsbaan voor helikopters dienst moet gaan doen. De geplande renovatie zal circa 3 tot 5 maanden duren.

Het is daardoor zeer onzeker of De Kooy bijtijds beschikbaar is voor de Texel Airshow. Daarom heeft de organisatie helaas de beslissing moeten nemen om de in 2011 geplande Texel Airshow met nog één jaar te verzetten. De eerstvolgende Texel Airshow staat nu gepland op zaterdag 28 juli 2012.

Wij beseffen, dat we velen teleurstellen, maar kunnen niets anders dan deze beslissing nemen. Voordeel is dat de Texel Airshow 2012 kan worden gekoppeld aan het 75-jarig bestaan van Texel Airport. Een extra reden om een spectaculaire Texel Airshow te organiseren.

But I do hope they deliver. Last two years with had lots of ambitious plans from both Texel and Lelystad, but both did not deliver ... Would be nice to have a show other the Open Dagen.

Last two years ambitious plans from Texel? Must have missed it, Can you point to some links? Three years ago the big man from Texel (sorry Mike, I mean your father in this, not you) said in a local newspaper organising Texel took too much energy to do it more than once in three years. This should not bring Texel earlier then 1,5 weeks ago, which can be read in this thread why it was impossible to happen.
