Spyker Aircraft
Digging up this topic with a somewhat related question. Does anyone know if any Spyker-produced aircraft or replica still exists anywhere in the world? So far I can't find any info on this on the web, and wonder if anything at all survives from what Spyker used to produce about 95 years ago.
Thanks,
Herbert

Spyker + SAAB = two car companies with aviation heritage
What specific aircraft types were built by Spyker?
Thanks from Sweden.

By the way, how will the newest (fighter) aircraft be mentioned in the future? Spyker Gripen or, lets say: Grip Spike?

Nope, please check your facts before making bold statements...aviodromefriend wrote:You mean two aviation companies that became car builders.daniel-k wrote:Spyker + SAAB = two car companies with aviation heritage
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyker" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . Yes, the brothers Spijker started building cars first, then planes...
Please do note that the present-day Spyker cars ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyker_Cars" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) only has the brandname in common. There is not a single tie to the illustrious history made by the original "Spijker brothers".
The brothers Spijker didn't make that many aircraft. Unfortunately only in Dutch, but http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyker_(vliegtuigfabrikant" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) gives some clues. Only the Spyker V-2 biplane trainer aircraft was built in any numbers, 56 in all for the Dutch military forces, powered by an 80 horsepower Thulin engine.
Other orders were eventually cancelled. After 1919 Spyker made no more aircraft.
As already noted online photos of Spyker aircraft are unfortunately few and far between.
A little bit of "thread drift": I wish the Saab company all the best (have a soft spot for Swedish cars and lorries as it is ), but I wouldn't bank too much on Victor Muller...
He is rather controversial in Holland (most information only in Dutch I'm afraid) and a lot of people are surprised the Spyker Car Company has still not fallen by the wayside in this "credit crunch crisis"...
The present-day Spyker Cars has so far not made any profits in its existence as far as I know.
Re: REQ: photo material of Spyker Aircraft
Thanks Stratofreighter for the link to the Dutch wiki. A bit funny that they used Swedish engines! (though you may argue that the Thulins were a French design...)
To clearify - today's Saab aircraft company only shares the brand name with the Saab car company. There will be no Spyker Gripen...

Re: REQ: photo material of Spyker Aircraft
Well, Daniel, that's not entirely true. SAAB started out in 1937 as a purely aircraft company, producing planes for the Swedish Air Force. It wasn't till 1944 that SAAB started to build cars. The SAAB aircraft company and SAAB car company were for a long time the very same company. Even today, the official SAAB car logo still has a plane in it. If you look back to the model numbers for civil products of SAAB cars and aircraft in the forties and fifties, you can see that they are in the very same range, meaning that for example SAAB 90 was an aircraft (the Scandia), SAAB 91 was an aircraft (the Safir), SAAB 92 and most up to 99 were cars.daniel-k wrote:To clearify - today's Saab aircraft company only shares the brand name with the Saab car company. In 1969, it was decided to split the car and plane department and make each of them an independent company. SAAB car company merged with Scania to SAAB-Scania. In this timeframe, the type numbering got different but still had a 9 in them, with examples like SAAB 900, 9000 etc.
1989 Saw another split, with SAAB car company becoming independent from Scania again. General Motors and an investment company devided the shares, with GM later buying all the shares from the investment company, thus becoming the sole owner.
As you'll know, this week the Dutch car company Spyker bought the SAAB car company from GM.

Re: REQ: photo material of Spyker Aircraft
But back to my question, anybody for a Spyker plane, either original, partly original or a replica anywhere in the world? Please note that some of the planes were produced under the Trompenburg brand.
Thanks,
Herbert

Re: REQ: photo material of Spyker Aircraft
Hmmm... I do wonder about the Saab B-17 till J-35 ? Or were they "different" as being entirely military products . The car and aviation department "separation proces" started from about 1989 onwards when General Motors acquired 51 percent of the stock. In 2000 GM bought the remaining shares.Herbertvh wrote:If you look back to the model numbers of the SAAB cars and aircraft in the forties and fifties, you can see that they are in the very same range, meaning that for example SAAB 90 was a car, SAAB 91 was an aircraft (the Safir), SAAB 92 was a car again. Re: REQ: photo material of Spyker Aircraft
Strato,
The "90-series" were used for "civil products", like the Safir and several cars. The development and production of these products were not started for the Swedish Armed Forces or government, but were intended for the civil market.
Other series were used for the "military products". The J-17, J-35 Draken and J-37 Viggen are examples of this product range.

# OUD NIEUWS #

Well, this was my point put in one sentence - as legal companies the two Saabs of today are totally separated.Herbertvh wrote:Well, Daniel, that's not entirely true.
