This year I go to the World soccer championship in South Africa (with some friends). After the matches against Japan and Denmark in Johannesburg and Durban and some wildlife and sun I will have some spotting fun for two days at the airport. Probably this will be june 25th on friday and june 26th on saturday. Leaving Johannesburg somewhere in the evening.
I printed out the information of the airport on this site (airfield directions) but still have some questions.

Is it save to go on your own around the airport by car and take some pictures of landing airliners. I mean it is not Schiphol Amsterdam for example where every spotting place is save.

Is 200 mm sufficient for landing shots when 03r or 21l is in use(spotting point 5 or 6).
On airliners.net you will see lots of pictures alongside 03r-21l when the airliners touch down.
That spotting point is not on the map. Do we need more than 200mm there and where can you find that point.

Is 200 mm enough for spotting point 4 on the map or do we need more than 200 mm?

So don't hesitate to give me the information I need. The most important thing is that I need the best opportunities for just 2 days of spotting (I am more into photographing then numbers). Even if you say that spotting in the terminal is better or saver.

The final question is about the best and cheapest hotels around the airport. I don't want to drive that much from hotel to the airport because they drive on the otherside of the road (left) and to save time.

Hello Andre,

Spotting there is quite safe. I stood in "the landing" 4 a few hours and it is very ok. You have a good overview of cars driving around. Just stay in your car and get out 2 take a pic, 200mm is enough. There are also a lot of other spots. We also stood somewhere halfway the runway. The terminal was not too good. On the airfield are 2 technical schools and easy to visit, just in case....

Near the eastern landing spot is a cheap hotel called "love hotel". The name is not what you think it is. It is just cheap, safe and busy.

sorry voor de late reactie maar ik weet niet hoe ik gesignaleerd kan worden dat iemand heeft gereageerd op mn post. Het hotel ligt aan de oostkant van de baankop. Misschien weten ze het als je de auto afhaald. Een stuk ten noorden van het vliegveld zit wel een lodge waar je aardig kunt pingelen. Die ligt net onder Lanseria. Daar kun je wel een reservering maken.

Voor wat het waard is; afgelopen twee december heb ik twee nachten in het Airport Grand Hotel in Boksburg gezet, op pakweg een kilometer van baankop 03R. Kwaliteitshotel tegen redelijke prijs en de kisten komen er recht overheen zetten. En er is een zwembad met bar.

Alvast bedankt voor jullie reactie. Wij hebben ondertussen wel begrepen dat zowat alle hotels in en rond Johannesburg al vergeven zijn tijdens de WK. Reisorganisaties hebben een aardige claim gelegd op die hotels maar ook alle wild/life parken. Nu de interesse tegenvalt voor een bezoek aan een wk wedstrijd zal er het volgende gebeuren. Ze gaan voor dumpprijzen (vlucht, kaartjes, hotel en wild-life park) weg of de hotelkamers komen weer vrij. Het probleem is nu ook nog eens dat de vrije hotelkamers of Bed & Breakfast kamers voor de hoofdprijs worden aangeboden. Hoe dan ook wij hebben onze reis rond (voor de wedstrijd in Johannesburg zijn wij al uitgeweken naar Pretoria en voor de wedstrijd in Durban zitten we ook ergens anders in een B & B )alleen moet ik nog wat zien te verzinnen voor mijn 2 vrije dagen rond het vliegveld. Uiteindelijk gaat dit wel lukken. Hebben jullie nog leuke tips voor het fotograferen rond het vliegveld. Ik bedoel langs de baan?
