Oshkosh 2010 July 26-August 1

Post by Stratofreighter »

Taken from the AvWeb Flash from this Thursday, also see http://www.eaa.org/news/2009/2009-12-03_dc3.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; :
An organization called The Last Time is inviting DC-3 and C-47 operators
to participate in a 25-ship formation to arrive at Wittman Field on the
opening day of AirVenture 2010 next July 26. "This historic flight will
recreate an image of a time gone by," say the organizers. The huge
formation will kick off a week of festivities celebrating the 75th
anniversary of the legendary aircraft and the people who served with it in
hundreds of different roles.

It's being announced today to commemorate the
75th anniversary of the first flight of the aircraft at the Douglas
factory in Long Beach, Calif. EAA is hoping for dozens of DC-3s and C-47s
to attend AirVenture but there are only 25 slots open for the formation
flight and the funding assistance that goes with it.

Plans are for a mass arrival of DC-3s on 26 July, which will join additional aircraft on the ground at Oshkosh. Those in the mass arrival will muster on 24 July at Rock Falls, IL, and will be open to the public on 25 July. They will depart Rock Falls at 14:30, arriving at Oshkosh around an hour later. 35 DC-3s have already been signed up to participate, even though the project was announced less that a month ago, including one that the organisers are keeping 'top secret'. See http://www.thelasttime.org/ for more information, including the full list of participants. An event perhaps not to be missed...

Press release of today:

By Russ Niles, Editor-in-Chief
04-03-2010

Organizers of a mass arrival of DC-3s and C-47s at AirVenture Oshkosh this year now expect 40 aircraft to take part. The original goal was 25 aircraft making an hour-long flight from Rock Falls, Ill., to Wittman Regional Airport for a formation flyby at 1,000 feet to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the first flight of the iconic aircraft. Organizers were deluged with requests to participate in the flight, which will be the largest formation of Douglases since the Second World War. The current record is 27, set in South Africa in 1985. There are 12 aircraft on standby to fill any slots that open up before the flight. Once in Oshkosh, the aircraft will be the centerpiece of festivities throughout the week and may include a one-of-a-kind heritage flight.
The Altus Air Force Base "Rat Pack" C-17 Globemaster demonstration team has been approved to fly in formation with three C-47s to commemorate the huge impact the Douglas had on the outcome of the Second World War and to remember those who didn't come back. The heritage flight still must be approved by EAA but that's expected shortly. Celebrities, C-47 war veterans and some other surprises are in store for the event, which begins with two days of preparation at Rock Falls.

Vietnam-Era A-4B, Skyraider to be Part of 'Salute to Veteran

Vietnam-Era A-4B, Skyraider to be Part of 'Salute to Veterans' at AirVenture 2010

The Warbird Heritage Foundation, of Waukegan, Illinois, will continue its regular participation at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in 2010, as it will bring two of its Vietnam-era aircraft — a Douglas A-4B Skyhawk jet and Douglas AD-1 Skyraider single-engine radial piston — to be part of EAA's "Salute to Veterans" commemoration at Oshkosh.

The Skyhawk was the Navy's primary light bomber during the early years in Vietnam. The Foundation's Skyhawk is the only museum-owned, single-place example in the United States, according to museum founder Paul Wood. "The aircraft is painted to represent the A-4C piloted by Lt. Cmdr. TR Swartz," Wood explained.

Swartz is credited with the Skyhawk's only air-to-air victory during Vietnam when he used an unguided Zuni rocket to shoot down a North Vietnamese Air Force MiG 17 in May 1967. Swartz told his story during a Warbirds in Review presentation in 2009.

The museum's AD-1 Skyraider is an older version, "One of the oldest remaining Skyraiders in existence," Wood said. Its paint scheme is that of the 6th Special Operations squadron that flew in Southeast Asia during Vietnam.

Enthusiasts won't want to miss seeing it this summer, as it will contain a full complement of simulated armaments, including missiles, Daisy Cutter bombs, and Gatling gun. "We're going to use all of its 15 hard points," Wood said.

The aircraft are part of the rapidly growing list of airplanes that have been committed to the Salute to Veterans activities, which is a national partnership led by EAA, the Warbirds of America, and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Activities will take place throughout the AirVenture grounds during the week, including the concluding concert by actor Gary Sinise's "Lt. Dan Band" on Friday evening, July 30.

'Hawk One' Sabre Coming to AirVenture

A Canadair Sabre 5 fighter jet owned by Vintage Wings of Canada will return to one of its many former homes this summer – Oshkosh, Wisconsin – where it will be a featured warbird attraction at EAA AirVenture 2010. The aircraft, Hawk One, has one of the most spectacular paint schemes ever to grace the Sabre - that of the Royal Canadian Air Force Golden Hawks precision aerobatic team. The aircraft traveled throughout Canada in 2009 to help celebrate the country's Centennial of Aviation. The Golden Hawks team was created in 1959 to honor the RCAF's 35th anniversary along with Canada's golden (50th) anniversary of flight.

This very aircraft – SN 23314 – was owned by the EAA Aviation Foundation from 1992-1996. Vintage Wings of Canada acquired it in 2007 from a private owner who lived in Oshkosh.

Carolyn Leslie, Vintage Wings hangar manager, said the decision to bring Hawk One (C-GSBR) to AirVenture was made last summer after they had brought three World War II fighters to Oshkosh for the centennial. Vintage Wings' P-40, Corsair, and Spitfire appearances were very well received – in fact P-40 won the 2010 Warbirds Best Fighter award and was one of the more memorable airplanes to be featured at a Warbirds in Review presentation. (The Corsair was an EAA Grand Champion in 2003.)

"We kept the Sabre in Canada last year, and decided to have it come down this year," she said. "Everyone had such a nice time (at Oshkosh 2009). The crew working on the ramp (AeroShell Square) were amazing."

Like the P-40 last year, Hawk One is slated to be featured in a Warbirds in Review presentation, with a very special pilot to be announced who flew her years ago.

Leslie said Vintage Wings would also bring its Westland Lysander IIIA to AirVenture 2010. That airplane, also acquired in 2007, is in the final stages of restoration at Vintage Wings' Gatineau, Quebec, headquarters.

The Sabre Jet is a swept-wing, single-seat aircraft long recognized as one of the finest fighter aircraft of all time, and the Sabre 5 and Sabre 6 models built by Canadair at its Montreal plant are considered the most capable of all variants. More than 9,500 aircraft were built, including six variants, totaling over 1,800 planes built in Canada.

Canadair Sabres served both in Canada and with 12 squadrons at RCAF stations in Europe with NATO. Chosen by the RCAF as its frontline day fighter in August 1949, Sabres served in Western Europe from the early days of the Cold War until it was replaced by the CF-104 Starfighter beginning in 1962.

This aircraft will be flown by Clay Lacy and will be one of the lead aircraft in the 40 ship mass formation arrival. It will be available for viewing and photos at KSQI July 23-25 and will be on the ground at AirVenture from July 26-31.

And as far as I know this aircraft hasn't visited many if any airshows in the 1990s or 2000s...

See the World's Only Privately Flown Harrier at Oshkosh

See the World's Only Privately Flown Harrier at Oshkosh

Among the many unique aircraft aviation enthusiasts get to see up close in Oshkosh this year will be the world's only privately owned, civilian-flyable Harrier jump jet. Its owner, retired Marine test pilot Lt. Col. Art Nalls, EAA 689513/Warbirds 549224, plans to arrive at Oshkosh in his BAE Sea Harrier F/A2 on Sunday before opening day, then make several flying demonstrations throughout the week.

He purchased the completely demilitarized aircraft in 2006 from a broker who had obtained it from Britain's Royal Navy surplus. It's the second Sea Harrier ever manufactured, Nalls said, and at 31 years old, the oldest surviving one.
See the World's Only Privately Flown Harrier at Oshkosh

AirVenture attendees have seen numerous American AV-8A and AV-8B Harriers demonstrate the type's unique vertical/short take-off and landing (V/STOL) abilities, but Nall's will be the first British Sea Harrier to appear. The differences in the aircraft variants are significant, he said.

"The Sea Harrier is a fighter aircraft designed to shoot down enemy aircraft," he said, while the AV-8s were designed for air-to-ground and close air support. "The Sea Harrier has a bigger nose, a raised canopy for better visibility, and shorter wings." It also has a 50,000 feet-per-minute climb rate, much faster that of the AV/8, which Nalls spent most of his military career flying.

With the aircraft based at St. Mary's County Airport, Maryland, Nalls is the first pilot to be civilian and aerobatic rated in Harriers. His flying partner and fellow test pilot, Retired USMC Major General Joe Anderson, is the second. Anderson and Nalls have known each other for 25 years and flew AV-8A Harriers in the famous Ace of Spades Squadron, VMA-231. Anderson, now the Deputy Director for the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C., also has attained the rare feat of 2,500 flight hours in Harriers.

Flying demonstration at Oshkosh times have yet to be finalized, so stay tuned. However, it'll be obvious when the Harrier is flying; when Nalls fires up the thunderous Rolls-Royce Pegasus Mk.106 vectored thrust turbofans, virtually everyone on the convention grounds heads for the flight line. When not flying, the aircraft will be on static display on AeroShell Square.

Re: Oshkosh 2010 July 26-August 1

Post by Linerman »

As I’ve not seen a report here from Oshkosh, I thought I’d upload my notes from the period 26-28 July. For those who have not visited AirVenture, it is certainly worth the effort. This year’s event attracted some 2,380 show aircraft, and more than 7,500 visiting aircraft on top of that. It has outgrown the confines of Wittman Regional airport and visitors now are spread across a number of airfields within a 50 mile radius, including Appleton, Fond du Lac and Green Bay. The build-up to the 2010 event was complicated by heavy rain, meaning that some of the parking areas at Oshkosh were still waterlogged when the show began. This in turn meant that a number of show aircraft had to park away from the usual display areas; however, by the middle of the week, some areas had drained sufficiently to allow a bit of repositioning.

There are two concrete strips at Oshkosh, one north-south and the other east-west. Each has a parallel grass strip and there are separate strips for ultralights, helicopters and amphibians (the latter on nearby Lake Winnebago). The concrete strips are sub-divided to make more efficient use of their length, meaning that effectively there are six active runways; all are used simultaneously, so you have to keep on your toes. Once on the ground, most show aircraft are parked by type, and types are generally grouped together logically. Thus all the O-1s and L-4s will be parked in the same area. Heavier metal parks either on the Aeroshell square, the centrepiece of AirVenture, or on Warbird Alley. In addition, there is a trade area where companies statically exhibit their aircraft; and a Federal pavilion where non-DOD parented Government organisations were represented.

Each year, AirVenture has a number of themes, mostly derived from anniversaries. Most notably, this year’s event included a tribute to the DC-3 in its 75th anniversary year. In all (and including those at the Basler Turbo Conversions facility), there were over 50 DC-3s on the airfield with, at one point, 24 of the type in the circuit. Impressive stuff. AirVenture is an incredible experience, the organisation is slick and people all very friendly; it certainly knocks the self-styled ‘World’s biggest airshow’ into a cocked hat. Clearly, with over 10,000 aircraft to keep track of, you have to be selective in what you choose to write down. I concentrated on the heavier stuff and the warbirds; those marked * were in the trade static area or in/around the Federal pavilion; and those marked # were visitors (or based aircraft) that were parked on the terminal/FBO side of the airfield. Construction numbers are shown in ( ) where obtained direct from the aircraft. For some types, I have included the ex-military identity in [ ].
