Bitburg revisited

Post by henkderidder »

In september 97 the 52 FW took over from what was left of Bitburg AB. From the shelter eara of the former 525 TFS it was possible to make these pics. It was also possible to make pics of the flightline near and from the tower! I hope you enjoy, comments welcome.

It was indeed a spotters' heaven.

Nice pictures.... Perhaps an idea of making this a bit bigger tread for Bitburg (also the years before?)?

uray for that.. Bitburg used to be a very popular destination for spotters. I can hardly imagine no pictures were taken then.

I went to Bitburg several times back in the 80's. The place was not exactly spotter friendly then. Once I was arrested and and taken to the local Police office for questioning. Several other times I was only told to leave. Here are a few taken in the easterly wind approach on a good day in August 1984.

Early morning, 1st wave of locals recovering.

Low approach by a JG74 F-4.
Image

One of the 7 Spangdahlem F-4's which diverted to Bitburg that day for some reason.

And another low approach, this time a JG43 Alphajet.

I always assumed BT was a relaxed place to stay near the old tree ;-) But nevertheless great to see these pics. The SP Phantom is great but also the German Alpha Jet. Keep them coming!
