Spotting Indonesia and Singapore

Post by Optimus »

Hi,

I'm off to Asia next month, and hopefully I will be able to do some spotting (civil and mil. transports). If anyone wants to share some info on spotting conditions (non-photography) at Johor Bahru (Malaysia), Singapore-Seletar, Paya Lebar, Jakarta (also Halim), Yogjakarta and Surabaya, please do.

If there's is something else on the way from Jakarta towards Surabaya I should know off, please let me know.

Kind regards,

Kees

First stop with viewing options near the cargo area. Take the road left to the Cargo and Sofitel hotel. Next road to the right, which brings to the area where the flying clubs have their offices and go to the parking to the left. You will have a limited view on the cargo apron.
Websites of the flying clubs at Senai:
http://www.johorflyingclub.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.eliteflyingclub.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
From one the flying clubs you can obtain permission to visit their aircraft and you can then proceed to the gate give your passport to the guard and get you pass. Then you can walk all the way in front of the cargo building on the apron side to the hangars in the meantime spot all the aircraft.
Taking pictures is prohibited.

Visit in 2007 gave:
Za 11 aug 2007
N338DA C421C
N7131G PZL104 Wilga 80
XU-RKF B727-223F Royal Khmer Airlines Air Cargo titles
ZS-TRA B727-224F
4R-SE. SD330 Aero Lanka (no full reg on the tail)

After that you can drive back to the main terminal and the hangar on the left of the apron houses the aircraft from the sultan of Johor which can be seen when the hangar doors are open.
Unfortunately the terminal has no observation or viewing facilities. On the right side of the apron there could be the odd helicopter parked.

For visiting Paya Labar and Seletar use the services of a cab make contact with a taxi cab driver working for CityCab who can pick you up from Queenstreet. The name of the cab driver is Ronald Eng and he knowns how to get around Selatar east and west camp hangars. He also has some knowlegde of what spotting is all about. You can stand on the roof of the cab if you like to read the regs. So if you plan a trip to Seletar you can contact him on his mobile +65 9487 7002 (number given with his permission).

Hi Kees,

Jakarta is a good place to stay for 2/3 days. In that time you `ll see most common traffic there.

The best to stay is the airport hotel on the 2nd floor of th international terminal 2 (hope I don`t mix Terminal 1or 2). You got a good, and luxery few here on international traffic, all Garuda, and Merpati. price is around 70 euro`s.

With a small and free transfer bus, you can go to the domestic terminal. There are I think 5 fewing airea`s. All with a differend few, on the middel you don`t miss a thing, and can stay there without any problem. Traffic will go on whole day. I changed every 2/3 hours to another terminal ( also to cool of).

For Halim you can take a taxi witch costs you around 200.000 rp. Adivice you to take Bleu bird government taxi, they can betrusted, the rest absolutely not. There is no free access on Halim, you have to ask for the airport authorities in the Terminal. If you are lucky they give you. You have to try because it is worth is if you get access. In the terminal there are some empty rooms with a few, just walke in there.
Open your eyes on the road to Halim, because there are some militairy planes down the road.

Never been to surabaya, but conditions are fine there. There is a place on the beach to watch planes.

Ok good luck
