Machloop in Wales 14th-17th April

And a sole GR9 that I tracked on the scanner(otherwise i'd have been gone!!) from the Licfield corridor from 17.30hrs to the Bwlch just after 18.00hrs

Didn't know that the brits had alphajets ;)... nice pic though :D
YOU DON'T NEED WHITE LENSES IF YOU GOT A WHITE CAMERA.

Which freq's did you use? was there last summer, had my scanner with me but could not hear anything what was going low level. Only some LN F-15's at high alltitude.
Assume makes an ASS of U and ME.

Just to answer some questions:

1. The gear I was using was a Nikon D3 with an 80-400mm/f4-5.6 lens

2. The Alpha jet and F3 are belonging to QinetiQ (Empire Test Pilots School)
so are not actually RAF but are flown by RAF/Civvie/Foreign aircrews.

3. The freq's on the scanner are too many to list but if you go to warplane.co.uk you'll find them there. I basically picked him up on a Swanwick low level freq as he crossed the U.K through the Licfield corridor and declared desending into low level for 20 mins, which was why he pulled up as he exited the Machloop 20 mins later!!!

Hi Pat,

Great pictures, one question:

Could you (or anyone else who has been there) post any pictures of the spot where you were standing? In some pictures of the machloop I find it hard to believe the photographer wasn't in a chaseplane ;-)

The F3 with code 092 is an example of that.

Hi Marcel,
Nope, no chase planes involved!! Just a lot of sweat(and some tears,blood,puke, when going up Blue Bell hill!!!) and a head for heights, which I actaully dont have, but its worth it in the end!
The locations were a closely guarded secret among a few (20-30) photographers of which I was pleased to join at the latter end of the good aul days, but with the advent of certain websites its gone ballistic!
If you go to lowfly.net it will tell you where but I didnt send you to that site :wink: ,

P.S: The aircraft 092 is actually a Tornado GR4A, the ground hugging strike/recce version, not an F3 which is the one in the Alpha jet chase. The F3 came later than the GR4 when the RAF decided not to buy the F-15/F-14 to replace the F-4. They redesigned the Tornado IDS to the F3. Its longer than the GR4 with a slimmer nose and different colour. Its in the process of being replaced itself by the Typhoon F2 and with the Typhoon FGR1 trickling into service at the moment the Tornado GR4 drivers will be getting nervous also!!
