Hi,
I'm going to Switserland this spring (end of April) and wil pass/visit Dübendorf (LSMD), Emmen (LSME), Alpnach (LSMA) and Magadino/Locarno (LSMO).
This is my first visit to Switserland, so please help me out with the following questions:
- What are the best spotting places? (I already have the Scramble airfield guides of Emmen, Alpnach and Magadino)
- Are the any restrictions about entering the airfields?
- Are the any restrictions about photography?
- What are the do's and don'ts?
- Any other tips?
Thnx,
Arnold Roolvink

Hi Arnold,
Switserland is a great place to be, and i bet you'll have lots of fun there!
I only know the situation @ Emmen and Alpnach.
Alpnach:
At the otherside of the airfield is an "spottersplek" from this point you can take pictures of the Helo's on the platform (and when present, you can see some interesting helo's in the maintenance hangars). Often the helicopters (AS332/532 / Al.III) take of from the platform or the taxitrack in front of the "spottersbult" which results in very nice pics.
note: spottersbult marked in the red circle
Emmen:
wow.. had a great time here! We had little activity here (some UAV's, 1 PC-7, 3 PC-9's 2 F-5F's and 3 F-18's). There is only 1 side (as far as we could find) to photograph the aircraft. (which is near the village).
On a quarter of the runway there's a spot on which you can stand and this is roughly some 5 meters from the runway. you can easily photograph the aircraft here with a 35 - 105 mm lense. Beware of the barriers (slagbomen).. they can and will hit you haha!
note: spottersplaces marked in the red circles
Finally one more thing! bring some noise protection with you (ie. earplugs)
You'll soon enough find out why...
Btw. Entering airfields is not wisely. At most airports you can cross the runway (Meiringen, Alpnach, Emmen, Stans but this is another story because you can drive around here ON the field).
Have fun and enjoy your trip.

Take a look at this great website.
http://saf21.info/homepage/home.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And also the threads at Flugzeugforum about the airfields you mentioned.
At the official website you can find more information about flying activities. Take a look at the website of the various bases.

Magadino is superb for photographing! No fences, quite close to the taxiway (70-200) and a little bit less to rwy (200-300mm). Was there last summer and when you're not too late (after 1600h.) the sun is good.
Best place to stand is between rwy and Eliticino (spot 1 uit het hoofd). For civil the field is great too. Lots of helo's and small planes. On the back side (where the parking for a/c is), you can find the office and if you ask friendly you can walk at the tarmac (civils only). Photographing the helicopters of Eliticino is no problem at all.

Enjoy your stay at Magadino!

Hi,
I personally would add Stans / Buochs also to your list! It's on your way from Emmen to Alpnach (or Locarno), some 20km south of Luzern. Great possibilities with great (special!) a/c!
Regards.

I know, Brian.
But I'm on vacantion with my girlfriend. She understand my passion for airplanes and it's no problam to make a small detour. But Alpnach to Meiringen is 40km and then we must go the full 40km back because the Sustenpass is closed till May.
So the road from Zürich to Lugano is our guide.
After Lugano the trip will continue to Milano, Monaco, Nice, Cannes and then back north, back home to The Netherlands.
So tips for visits to bases near Milano and the French Riviera are also welcome.
