Well, quality wise yes, but remember the quantity and diversity was a lot less those days.. You can check the old showreports on that one.
Remember that an operational F-104 in those days was the same as an F-16 in our days. Hard to imagine, but I am sure seasoned Leeuwarden or Volkel spotters in 1974 may complain about "another of those damn F-104's bashing the circuit" Just as I did at SSB when a day passed by with *only* 8 CR F-15's
Times are-a-changing. But F-4's are still to be found at Wittmund, F-5's in Switzerland and Austria. Go to Croatia or Romania and there are still MiG-21's. Might cost some time and effort, but there are still possibilities for those willing to take the chance.. So there's still hope for us spotters longing for those old fighters ! When men were real men and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were still small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri
But on the other hand, century fighters rule and I must admit that the display lines in those days seem to be *in between the public* instead of hundreds of meters in front of them.. )

Exactly.....duh!
I would trade all that current stuff any day for a bunch of noise-and smokemakers like F-104´s, a G-91, USAF F-4 or a F-100.
Besides, you could also get next to the planes as the footage shows. And not have a fence and 10 m between you and the plane. Impossible in these days (understandable by the way)

I always say a boy can learn more at an airport than at any school.

First of all, wow, what a great video, thank you very much for sharing . Do you mind if it is linked to from other sites?
As for the ensuing discussions: Photo-wise, I actually prefer statics like the ones at Leeuwarden of Volkel in recent years (and at many other European shows) over those where the aircraft are surrounded by the public, like they still are at Open Houses / Airshow in the States. And I prefer events like KB (talk about variety!) or a fotoday at Red Flag over any Open Day anywhere.
There is still a lot of variety though, of active aircraft (Europe) and warbirds (the States). If you know where to find them, you can still find a lot of the aircraft from those days flying around now. Last year we had Turkish Stars at Volkel with as many NF-5A/Bs as we used to have at an Open Day in the 70s and 80s!
And to be honoust, a teen-fighter (F-15/16/18 ) or Mirage 2000, Rafale or Typhoon solo-display is much more impressive and fun to look at than a Starfighter or Phantom, which needed 5 minutes and 15 kilometers to make a 180 and be back over show-center (says he who travels half the world to see the Starfighter team).
But if anyone has more footage from days long gone, keep it coming . Sweet memories!

Not only types, also the number of flying fighters. In Denmark in the 80s I remember on top of many solo displays fly-bys by fourship Royal Navy F-4 fourship Royal Air Force Buccaneer. Those where the daysjb5 wrote:Explain me why?
Still like the mordern day airshows just can't compete with the good old days. Would also love to give up 2 years of civil spotting for one week in the 70s visiting CPH, CDG, FRA, LHR etc...
All the best, Michael

Great film. Nice to see the old shows on film, even if it was 8mm. The sound quality seemed too good for an airshow, and certainly too good for an 8mm camera. But it was masterfully synced to the action on the film-Bravo! Oh, the subtle Mark Knopfler in the background was a nice touch, too!
I have some dusty old 8mm movies, also. I need to learn how to make it into video files, and maybe then I'll be able to contribute something like this.
