W&R Cologne area + little LOG

Post by jurgen »

A ‘new’ Egyptian Buffalo at Köln-Bonn was a great incentive to get into the car and look for a couple of nearby Wrecks & Relics. Planning the trip is fairly easy these days with most German W&R locations programmed into my TomTom navigation device.

15mar08 ED11 Köln-Airport Möbel
Do27B-1 (HF+201) 27 278 AF Köln (D) pres
This Do27 hull is located on the first floor of this large ‘Ikea look-a-like’ furniture shop. It is certainly not visible from outside.

DHC-5D (1170) SU-BFJ 119 AF 2 Sqn act
An-124-100 UR-82007 19530501005 AF Antonov OKB civil
Long on my wish list was the red Piaggio with the fire department. I was told it was not visible from outside, but as I am stubborn and saw some opportunities on Google Earth I thought I would give it a go. The Alte Kölner Strasse runs parallel to runway 14/32. As soon as you see some aircraft through the bushes park your car at 50°52’39.14”N 7°08’33.88Ë. Walk to the fence, look for parking stand F18 (visible on a large sign) and try not to get blinded by the bright red plane which is the Piaggio. I know there were some changes to the W&R situation on base but had not make a record of it. So I did not see the G91 at the gate and the F-104 which should be near there.

15mar08 ED12 Köln-Mudra kaserne
Alpha Jet A (41+29) 0129 AF Köln-Mudra (D) pres
Whilst checking Google Earth I had some doubts if this Alpha Jet would be visible from outside. It is not visible from the main gate. You have to go a bit more to the east till the fence of the adjacent building (BDK Bücherdienst GMBH). You can clearly see the aircraft from the intake to its tail. On the tail is an unknown badge. White with the German iron cross in he upper left corner, the bottom part is red with two black (church?) towers.

F-104F 29+14 483-5066 AF Düren (D) pres
My second visit in a years time to this location, the first time I could not find it. I only came home to notice that I had already seen it ten years earlier… Sloppy bookkeeping, well at least now I also have a picture.

I'm wondering wether or not this is the same Alpha Jet that I saw yesterday...maybe you can help? I saw an Alpha Jet mounted on a pole at a gate at the southern-most perimeter of the barracks, and it was fully and clearly visible from the public road. Unfortunately we didn't stop to read it off...(I know, that's lesson one in the spotter's guide... ). My travellingcompanion thought he read ..+79, which makes it possible that he mistook the "2" for a "7"....(41+)29??. Your description of where and how you saw the Alpha Jet doesn't seem to match ours.

Furthermore, the spot where I saw 'my' Alpha Jet is still just an empty field of grass on Google Maps, so it must have been mounted there quite recently.

By the way, what I do see on Google Maps is a G91 at the main north gate, maybe you mistook that G91 for an Alpha Jet? (a bit far-fetched, I know)

Any help is welcome!

Best regards, and thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi Stephan,

I think we are talking about two completely different things.
The Mudra barracks are in town, not near the Koln-Bonn airfield.

The G91 and F-104 are clearly visible on Google earth.
Please tell me the coordinates of your Alpha Jet.

Thanks for your reply Jurgen,

I use Google Maps, not Google Earth, and I don't think getting coordinates are supported anymore by Maps. Anyway, 'my' Alpha Jet is at the gate that is located a hundred meters to the east of the Heidestrasse/Flughafenstrasse-intersection in the city of Wahn (this is the southwest-end of the airbase).

Best regards,

Stephan

PS: by the way, there's even two 104's visible on Google Maps. The southern one is a singleseater (its shadow gives this away) without external tanks. But this one is not visible from outside, I think. The northern one is a dualseater (again, shadow...) and has tiptanks. Unfortunately, the latter wasn't there anymore when we checked yesterday...

Stephan,

Below the Google Earth W&R situation at Koln.

And a bit more detail

Is the position of the Alpha jet correct?

I think the northern two aircraft (G91 and F-104) have left.
