Marcel used his 500mm 2.8 L and and 1.4 extender mainly. Myself I took most shots with a 300mm 2.8 L + 2.0 extender, but even sometimes I added a 1.4 extender to that configuration which gave me (300mm * 2.0 extender * 1.4 extender * 1.3 enlargement factor = 1092mm
My advise for Frank:
Buy the Canon 1200mm ;
Add a couple of 2x extenders, take a ladder in your backgarden and Voila. No need to drive all the way to Ramstein
