EHAM 07-01-2008
AMS could see some flight diversions on 7, 14 and 17/18 January 2008 as British Airports Authority staff strike action is set to hit hundreds of flights.
Strike action at BAA airports on 7, 14 and 17 January 2008 may affect hundreds of flights and many thousands of passengers.
The BAA runs seven UK airports - Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Southampton, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
By far the busiest and biggest of the airports is Heathrow in west London where British Airways alone would operate about 550 arriving and departing flights a day in January.
All told, Heathrow handles around 1,350 flights a day, with enticing long-haul destinations such as the Caribbean, Australasia and South Africa particularly popular for holidaymakers wanting to escape the dark and cold of January in the UK.
The second-biggest UK airport for BAA is Gatwick in West Sussex. Gatwick is scheduled to handle 87,000 passengers on 682 flights on January 7 which is the first of the planned strike days.
On the second strike day of January 14 Gatwick would handle 82,000 passengers on 646 flights, with 80,000 passengers due to pass through the airport on January 17 when 628 flights are planned, and 650 flights and 78,000 passengers due on January 18..
The third of the BAA London airports is Stansted in Essex which on a typical January day will handle around 50,000 to 60,000 passengers.
Both Glasgow and Edinburgh airports in Scotland are likely to handle around 20,000 passengers on the strike days.
Around 5,000 a day are likely to travel to and from Aberdeen airport which would typically handle around 220 flights a day in January, including trips to off-shore installations.
A British Airways spokesman said today: "For the sake of our customers and all customers using the airport, we would urge all the parties involved to keep talking and come to a sensible solution.
"We are speaking to BAA to understand its operational contingency plans if industrial action goes ahead."
Frances Tuke, of travel association Abta said: "Although mid-January is one of the quietest periods of the year for holidays, the major airports are still pretty busy and plenty of people are due to fly off abroad.
"We will be working with airlines and with the Federation of Tour Operators to ensure that we can get people away."
She went on: "It could be that not all BAA staff will go on strike and I am sure that BAA will have contingency plans.
"Also, other non-BAA airports such as Luton, Birmingham and Manchester may be able to help out. It would make sense for affected airlines to negotiate with these airports."

Grtz,
As a result of the political turmoil in Kenya and a resulting shortage of aviation fuel in East Africa KLM has to re-route its flights to both Entebbe and Nairobi. These flights make an additional stop in Tanzania for fuel (EBB) or a change of crew (NBO).

Good mornin',
Incoming around that time was G-PWNS CitationJet.
Incoming around the same time was a 737 in Basic ATA (former American Trans Air)-c/s. Anyone any clues?
