Published on 01/23/2024
Germany wants to provide Ukraine with Bundeswehr helicopters for the first time.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that
six Sea King helicopters from the German Navy,
which will no longer be used by the Bundeswehr anyway,
will be delivered from the second quarter.
Pistorius promised the delivery on Tuesday (today)
at the meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group , the so-called Ramstein format.
From the ministry's statement:
In 2024, Germany will further increase support for Ukraine with six SEA KING Mk41 multi-purpose helicopters from the Bundeswehr.
The delivery includes an extensive accessories and spare parts package
as well as aviation and technical training support.
Submission will be possible from the second quarter of 2024.
Minister Pistorius said at today's meeting:
“The SEA KING is a proven and robust helicopter
that will help Ukrainians in many areas: from reconnaissance over the Black Sea to transporting soldiers.
It is the first German delivery of its kind.
According to the defense department, Pistorius also promised further German deliveries to Ukraine,
with IRIS-T and Gepard,
additional artillery and artillery ammunition,
over 80 Leopard 1 A5 battle tanks
as well as additional armored personnel carriers,
engineer tanks and
bridge-laying tanks,
450 protected vehicles,
other systems for mine clearance,
as well as drones, radars and reconnaissance systems.
Germany had already announced this material previously.
The Navy's Sea King helicopters are currently being replaced by new Sea Lion helicopters based on the NH90 model,
which is being built by Airbus in Donauwörth.
The Bundeswehr's Sea King were put into service in the 1970s .
In recent years, the most important task has been sea rescue.
Addition: Great Britain had already promised Ukraine three helicopters of this type in November 2022 , the first of which was delivered in January last year . There was a BBC report on their use here last year .
