Lisbon week 25-2023

Post by LifelinerOne »

Hi!

Work brought me to Lisbon, and I added some time to spot on the Monday and Thursday. Also nice was that the hotel my company arranged was right in the approach for runway 03, which meant a few morning shots were possible.

At the airport I spotted at an overlook on the west-side of the airport. Nice place, but a bit tricky to find. Also, being June, the light was a bit harsh and heatwaves could also be a challenge.

Anyway, time for some pictures:

1. During the days, I came across several Azores Airlines Airbuses, like this A321-200NX CS-TSH:

2. Pretty nice to capture an ATR72 of Royal Air Maroc Express:

3. In short order, two Falcon 50s of the Portuguese Air Force landed, including these 17403:

4. A smaller Azores Airlines is this A320 CS-TKQ:

5. For the summer season, Eurowings is wet-leasing this Smartwings B737-800 OK-TVV:
ImageB738-SMW-OKTVV-LIS19jun23 by Anton Homma, on Flickr

6. Lisbon is A330-900 heaven, with TAP being the main operator. CS-TUK is flying in the Star Alliance-livery:

7. Private A109 9H-MPR swept in from the city:
ImageA109-PVT-9HMPR-LIS19jun23 by Anton Homma, on Flickr

8. TAP Express is wet-leasing three ERJ190s from Bulgaria Air, including this LZ-VAR:
ImageE190-TAP-LZVAR-LIS19jun23 by Anton Homma, on Flickr

9. In the past, TAP Express used to fly with ATR72s. They retired them but is now wet-leasing one from Xfly, this ES-ATK. Ironically, this one used to be operated by TAP in the past:

10. Quite happy with this Cabo Verde Airlines B737-700 D4-CCI:
ImageB737-TCV-D4CCI-LIS19jun23 by Anton Homma, on Flickr

11. Iberojet from Spain has a Portuguese branch as well, which operates this A330-900 CS-TKH:
ImageA339-IBJ-CSTKH-LIS19jun23 by Anton Homma, on Flickr

12. These Global 7500s are good looking planes as shown by LX-PAK:

13. Arriving from Bangor is this B737-800BBJ N310AG:

14. World2Fly is flying (almost) daily between Lisbon and Punta Cana with A350-900 EC-NOI:
ImageA359-W2F-ECNOI-LIS20jun23 by Anton Homma, on Flickr

15. In the early morning there are also some cargo movements, like this DHL B757-200F D-ALEQ:

16. ASL with B737-400SF OE-IAC:

17. Cargo Air with B737-400SF LZ-CGS:

18. And Star Air B767-200F OY-SRO:
ImageB762F-STR-OYSRO-LIS21jun23 by Anton Homma, on Flickr

19. Quite disappointing was that TAAG is using a HiFly A330-200 nowadays. I had hoped to catch a proper liveried B777 from them:

20. Capital Airlines is flying between Hangzhou and Lisbon and seen here landing is B-1043:

21. Azul can also be seen with the A330-900s, twice a day. I was very happy to catch the Pink Ribbon liveried one, PR-ANV:

Nice set. LIS is on my list for years but haven't had the chance to go there yet.

Familiar views for me...

There are actually three good spots right next to each other, with one indeed being a little tricky if you don't know the roads (it feels like you have to go through some buildings to get there), but another is right next to the road. From north to south:
1) 38.782588/ -9.139332
2) 38.781337/ -9.139515
3) 38.780128/ -9.140755
4) 38.767043/ -9.147490

I would guess these pictures were made from number 1, which is the best spot when traffic comes from the north (3 and 4 have very limited views for approaches from the north).
2 does not have many advantages, but it is a spot from where you can see the planes
3 is easiest to find and gives better views to some part of the platforms than 1. My main spot when I am by car, simply because you can stay in the car and don't have to be in the sun all the time. Also it has good views of southern approaches which 1 and 2 lack. And southern approaches are most common.
4 is the easiest spot to get to by public transport. It is about 15 min walk from Campo Grande metro station and less from Quinta das Conchas metro station. With some bushes for shade.

And as Lisbon only has one active runway these days, you never have to worry about missing traffic of course.

Just in case others want to give LIS a try...

Taxi services Uber/Bolt also get you to all places pretty quickly (and cheaply)! And you don't mess with parking. Only a car is of course handy against the sun and you are of course even faster everywhere.
