Lajes - 3x emergency landings in 24h 26/27 September (CIV)

Post by MikeRomeo »

Hello everyone

Although September has been a very quiet month at Lajes, on the 26 and 27 there were 3 emergency landings from airliners crossing the Atlantic. Emergency landing happend now and then and are not that uncommon, as the airfield is well located and suitable, being open 24/7.
26 around noon - Air France F-GZCF A330-203 SXM to CDG
27 around 1am - KLM PH-BVW B777-306/ER PBM to AMS
27 around noon - Avianca N781AV B787-8 BOG to LHR

The Avianca was actually a technical emergency and the aircraft is still present on the ground. Later on the 27, Wamos Air EC-NTX A330-343 was positioned from Madrid to take the passengers to Gatiwck.

A bit of history, Lajes, at least in recent years, most high profile emergency landing was the Air Transat A330 in 2001

A short update to the Avianca story. On the 7th Sky Lease Cargo B747 arrived with a new engine. It flew from Medellin and was supposed to leave on the same day. It departed last night to Miami. The Avianca is still on the ground.
