MADRID • A Spanish airliner carrying British holidaymakers from Glasgow yesterday skidded off a runway after landing in the Canary Islands, but there were no injuries, the Air Europa airline said.

The Boeing 737-800 "experienced an extended landing at 0723 GMT (6:23 am) on wet runway 21, stopping on the tarmac at the end of the said runway," at Arrecife airport on the island of Lanzarote, the company said. The 74 passengers left the plane "in the normal manner" and were taken to the terminal, "with no injuries or material damage having been caused."

The airline said it has opened an investigation to identify the cause of the incident. The plane was chartered by the British travel group Thomas Cook.

"We can confirm that an Air Europa flight (AEA196), which was chartered by Thomas Cook, was involved in a runway incident at Lanzarote's Arrecife Airport this morning," a spokesman for Thomas Cook said.

"Thomas Cook staff were on hand at the airport to assist all passengers and can confirm that all guests are now en route to their holiday hotels."

"Thomas Cook has called on Air Europa and the airport authorities to provide a full explanation."
