Small trip to Serbia Day 1

Post by jurgen »

Part 1 of 3 with perhaps some tips for those guys and gals deciding to go to the Batajnica show in September.

The original itinerary for this trip promised to be really great. The Kecskemet air show on August 1st, combined with the open day at Batajnica a day later and the huge museum at the Belgrade IAP. The Kecskemet show was cancelled fairly soon, so we had to reschedule. And only a week before the start of the trip, we were informed about the cancellation of the Batajnica open day! Out of the original group of sixteen, eight guys still found it interesting to go and so four cloggies and one from the UK started the journey at Amsterdam on Friday evening. Ed joined at Frankfurt and Mike and Mark were already asleep in the hotel in Belgrade.
We arrived in the early hours of 1 August in our hotel. In the morning we had to pick up the rental car in downtown Belgrade. After that the rest of the group was picked up at the hotel and we went a few minutes north to the first airfield. At about 09.00hr we arrived at:

Part of this friendly airfield was in use for the European Championships F2B line model flying. After asking it was no problem to cross the grass taxi track to the flight lines. The G-2A 23109, seen last year in a small white hangar, has gone (to New Zealand?). According to the forum at Airserbia.com, former Belgrade museum storage inmate Galeb 23001 should be here on rebuilt (http://forum.airserbia.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=3797" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). That same hangar now held two unidentified UTVA 75s and a dismantled grey J-20 Kraguj. The forward fuselage of Galeb 23159 had now moved move to a little open shed west of the hangars. This also held its wings and rear fuselage. Also in here were the pod of Gazelle 12812 (last year inside hangar), as well as its tail boom and two more of its kind. Upon leaving the field, Mike checked out a little hut east of the hangars and found three more gazelles. Unfortunately none was identified.

From several angles we had a good look at the ramps and no An-26 fuselage was seen. Three Boeing 727s were in storage next to the maintenance hangar, YU-AKF and one ending BF were read, and the final one escaped identification.

The museum was impressive as ever. I used last year’s report from Scramble, issue 353, to check the aircraft present.

Although we knew that there was no air show, we decided to check it one more time at Batajnica. Indeed, no go. We were allowed to photograph the gate guards at the main gate and at Moma.

Good thing we had exact coordinates for this place, otherwise it would have been impossible to find. The area around the former Times Club is being renovated. Only a single pub board is a reminder of the beer flowing past. Through some holes in the door we could see the MiG.

We then went looking for the An-2 north of town. We took a few wrong turns and as I had seen a picture of this aircraft being at the local airfield we decided to leave. Obviously the picture had the wrong caption as it was not there. It was noted at the Novi Sad location the next day by some other guys.

The F-84 has been rebuilt and put on display near the entrance. Time and money permitting, it will be restored. UTVA 53226 has a huge VW logo painted on the side.
The Mi-8 at Backi Jarak had gone to the Garage Club in Novi Sad. We later heard it was only a few hundred meters from the Times Club MiG-21.

We passed this small airfield on our way home to the hotel, just north of Belgrade. It was the last stop before we could enjoy a good meal and a few drinks at around 21.00hr.
