Spottting in Gando/Las Palmas Airport (pics)

Post by stipjes »

A week ago I returned from a weeks holiday with my girlfriend in Gran Canaria. Besides sunbathing, beers, good food and hiking in the mountains I did some spotting a Gando Air Base.
The base (annex Aiprort) has a lot of spots with a nice view of the base (see the Scramble airfield guide for more details).
From the gas station parking (highway exit 18 opposite to the preserved Casa 212) this is the view:

From the terminal terrace (spot 4 in the guide) there is a great view too (heathaze is a problem ofcourse):

No serial was read on the Puma :-(.

Spot 1 is great for photography in the morning, this is a Hornet landing on 03R (for a good shot you need to stay on a path between the fence and the appartment block):

North of spot one you are able to photograph inside the HAS area:

If runway 03L is used you need to be near the fence. Heathaze is tricky here:

I visited spot 01 twice in the morning (lost all 4 of my hubcaps btw). Is seems the morning sortie last from 10 to 11.... All the other days there was activity. It seems they squadron uses a part in the mountains for ground targeting. When we where hiking there 4 Hornets ran bombing patterns (nothing was dropped). Unfortunately I had no camera with me :-(.
Greetz,
